Parc Michel-Chartrand is a 1,850,000 square metre mostly forested park in Longueuil, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal. In the late 2010s the deer population exploded, until it reached approximately 140 by the early 2020s. This is well beyond the carrying capacity of an area that size, which according to some is about 12-15 deer. The ecological destruction was evident to anyone familiar with the park.
After much debate it was decided to cull the herd, as relocating them was fraught with too many problems. The cull took place in 2025. It's unclear how many deer remain in the park but it is now an exceedingly rare event to come upon a deer while walking the park's trails.
These photographs were taken between 2010 and 2025 when the herd was at its peak. During those years it was unusual to not see deer when in the park.

À la fin des années 2010, la population de cerfs a explosé, allant jusqu'à atteindre 140 individus au début des années 2020. Ce nombre dépasse largement la capacité porteuse d'un tel espace, estimée à environ 12 à 15 cerfs. La destruction de l'écosystème était flagrante pour quiconque connaissait le parc.
Après de nombreux débats, il a été décidé de procéder à un abattage sélectif, la relocalisation des animaux présentant trop de difficultés. Cet abattage a eu lieu en 2025. Le nombre précis de cerfs restants dans le parc n'est pas clair, mais il est désormais extrêmement rare d'en croiser un lors d'une balade sur les sentiers.
Ces photographies ont été prises entre 2010 et 2025, période où la population de cerfs était à son apogée. Durant ces années, il était inhabituel de ne pas apercevoir de cerfs sur les sentiers du parc.
